We would like to inform you about details of Domestic Early Entry for the 2024 Mölkky World Championship in Hakodate and changes in its entry period. The International Mölkky Organisation (IMO) has decided to impose limitations on the number of entries for international tournaments, including the 2024 Mölkky World Championship in Hakodate. In accordance with this decision, priority will be given to players qualified by national bodies that are members of the IMO.

For the 2024 Mölkky World Championship in Hakodate, the conditions for Domestic Early Entry are as follows:

【Qualifications for Domestic Early Entry】
All team members shall be residents of Japan and registered as “JMA Qualified Player” for FY2024 (from April 2024 to March 2025). However, all types of JMA Qualified Player registration (general, student, junior) are accepted.

World Championship Qualification Round and Finals Tournament: 4 to 6 members
■ Please form your team on your own. JMA does not get involved in team establishment.
■ A team of 4 members requires all 4 to play.
■ A team of 5 or 6 members can change players for each set and must play with 4 members.
■ A team of 7 or more members is not accepted to entry.

Capacity: 100 teams (Selected by lottery from applying teams *Lottery date is tentatively scheduled for 23 March)
*JMA Qualified Player registration is not required for this entry window.

#3 Domestic General Entry (2nd Phase)
Entry qualifications: None (anyone may apply)
Entry period: 1 April, 12:00 to 20 April, 23:59
Capacity: up to the maximum number of total capacity  (Selected by lottery from applying teams *Lottery date is tentatively scheduled for 21 April)
*JMA Qualified Player registration is not required for this entry window.

【Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) about the World Championship】

Q1: Can anyone participate in the Mölkky World Championship?

A1: There is a capacity limit to apply to the World Championship, but no special conditions except for early entry.You can participate by applying for the early entry before its capacity is filled or if you win the lottery for the general entry(1st or 2nd phase).However, for Nation Match (refer to Q5), only members selected by each country will participate, so its entry window is not opened in public. For the selection process of Japan national team/players, please refer to the URL 

The qualification for early entry: All team members shall be residents of Japan and registered as “JMA Qualified Player” for FY2024 (from April 2024 to March 2025).

Q2: What happens if I applied for early entry but haven’t completed to register as a JMA qualified player?

A2: Since all team members are required to be registered as JMA qualified players, the following judgments will apply:
If you applied as a team with 4 members and 1 or more members haven’t registered as JMA qualified players, your team won’t qualify for early entry, and your entry will be cancelled.
*The slots from cancelled entries will be added in the 1st phase of the general entry.

If you applied as a team with 5 or 6 members and only one member hasn’t registered as a JMA qualified player, the unregistered member will be removed from the member list. As long as at least 4 members are listed, the team qualifies for early entry.

Q3: When shall team members complete to register as JMA qualified players? Can team members be changed later?

A3: Please complete JMA Qualified Player registration for all team members before the team representative applies for early entry. If you need to change members after applying for early entry, the new member also must be registered as a JMA qualified player. Note that we will accept member changes until the end of April.
In case of discrepancies/errors during team member changes, based on the policy addressed in A2 above, your early entry may be cancelled.

Q4: Can we participate in the games with a team of 3 members?

A4: Each team must consist of 4 to 6 members, so you cannot apply with 3 members. However, in cases of unforeseen accidents or circumstances on the day, you may participate with games regarded as one member missing.
*If the team members are reduced from 4 to 3, please determine the throwing order as if there are still 4 members, and treat each turn of the missing member as a throwing error during the match.

Q5: When is the World Championship? What is Nation Match about?

A5: “2024 Mölkky World Championship in Hakodate” is scheduled from 23 to 25 August 2024.
Day 1: 23 August (Friday) … Opening Ceremony, Nation Match
Day 2: 24 August (Saturday) … World Championship (Qualification Round)
Day 3: 25 August (Sunday) … World Championship (Finals Tournament)

The World Championship main event held on 24 and 25 August, as mentioned in Q1, is an open tournament to determine the “world’s best team.” The nation match involves countries joining the International Mölkky Organisation, where representatives selected from each national body aim to become the “best national team.” (JMA defines the team/players participating with this Nation Match as the “Japan national team/players.”)

Q6: Will there be Warm-Up matches (doubles) held as seen in previous World Championships?

A6: There are no plans to hold doubles matches at the “2024 Mölkky World Championships in Hakodate”. However, we are currently considering other recreational or additional events. Further details will be announced later.

Q7: Is there a dress code for players?

A7: Not particularly. As long as it’s comfortable for play, it’s fine. Participating in the matches with attention-catching team uniforms or cosplay is also welcome. However, high-heels are not permitted for safety reasons. Please wear shoes suitable for exercise.
